Chapter Eleven

With so much to do, leaving the craft fair until Sally was ready was not an option. Her excitement was contagious and Randy was more than willing to go with the shop-till-you-drop principal. It was as if everything was a new experience, and he loved that he could share the moments with Sally. Next year, he hoped she’d be joining him for the eighth annual craft fair, something he needed to talk to her about.

With every passing hour, he was less inclined to let her walk out of his life. Even the jewelry designer understood Sally’s gentle kindness was unique. The woman had gone out of her way to make sure Randy saw it as well, but she need not have worried. When he was around Sally, his life was filled with a warmth he couldn’t explain. A caring about someone that went beyond friendship.

Randy pulled into the driveway at his mother’s house. He turned to Sally and took her hand. “Are you sure you still want to do this?”

“Of course. Why wouldn’t I? Did you forget to tell me they’re terrible cooks? Or about some skeleton you have hidden in your closet you don’t want me to know?” she asked, a teasing light in her eyes.

He shook his head. “Nothing like that, I promise. It’s just they want me to find someone special and they are definitely on board with me leaving the military in order to make it happen. And if they started thinking about you and I in that light, there’s no telling what they will say or do.”

“I see. Well then, we just need to remind your family I don’t live here and that we’re just friends.”

A friend he almost kissed. Twice. A friend he could swear wanted to be kissed both times. “Yes, I’m sure that will work.” Not likely. His mother and sister wouldn’t give up that easily, always looking for the happily-ever-after.

“Your mom will have dessert, won’t she?” Sally asked, changing the subject.

“I’m almost positive of that. You have quite a sweet tooth, something I didn’t expect. I mean, there was cocoa, and funnel cakes, peach pie, and even some fudge.”

Sally shrugged. “Long story, but I haven’t always eaten lots of treats. So let’s just say I’m sampling culinary delights while I can.” She laughed and slid out of the car, not bothering to wait for him to come around to her side.

Randy could get used to the sound of her laughter and her smile. She’d gone from nervous and looking around throughout the day to happy, smiling, and carefree. He much preferred the latter.

Ben’s dream to come home and get married and start a family suddenly made sense. Sally made the pieces all fall into place as she was exactly the type of person Randy would choose to date. Except she didn’t live here, and she was adamant a friendship was all she could offer. He needed to remember that and not let his heart get too caught up in the moment.
